Freedom in Servanthood

Updated: Feb 24, 2022

In this sermon, pst Theo is answering the crucial question: “How to build and boost you self-esteem and have a meaningful life”.

There are a lot of advice from the world, from psychiatrists, from blogs and friends how to become a better you. How to build your own self-esteem and self-worth.

In psychology, the term self-esteem is used to describe a person's overall subjective and individual sense of personal worth or value and how much you appreciate and like yourself.

But we should turn to the Word of God to find advice from the One who created us.

The world and our Greco-Roman way of thinking, tells us that we need to be kings in order to become free. That we need to be the best and achieve the highest in order to be and to feel like winners.

But we as Christians are not of this world. We do not live according to the kingdom of this world. In the Kingdom of God we submit completely under God’s royal rule and reign and. He is Sovereign over us.

Are we then not supposed to have self-esteem? How should we then value ourselves and be victorious in Christ?

I believe that we should have the esteem, the view and the value of self, which God has of us. We are His creation, made in His image. We are servants of the Most High King. We should humble ourselves under the Mighty Hand of God and HE will lift us up.

That is how we find our true worth and value. When we look into the mirror of the Word of God, we will truly see what HE made us to be.

When we become the servant of all, we are truly free from self. The esteem that you have of self should be according to God’s value of you, and not according to a worldly view, in which it is so easy to become prideful. Self-esteem and self-actualization should not be determined by self-worth, but by God’s standards and opinion of us.

Who I am IN CHRIST; not what is my self-esteem.

Who am I according to the Word of God, not according to my own achievements and success.

Who am I? Created BY Him (YHWH), IN and FOR Him.

It is not in having a great self-esteem that I find a meaningful life. But it is in servanthood that I find my value and true freedom. It is in knowing God that I loose myself and become more Christ-like.

Revelation 4:11 says: "Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are [exist] and were created."
